An Exhibit of Research into Weaving

Rong Libaray is a research and craft preservation organization based in Hangzhou. But they say it a little better on their website:

Róng Design Library was founded by PINWU Design Studio in 2015. It is a non-profit organization and the first library in China focusing on traditional handcrafts and materials.
The core mission is to preserve the knowledge of Chinese traditional crafts and related materials. Furthermore, it offers a platform to deconstruct crafts, analyze materials and creating contemporary designs. Programs such as RONG Design Exhibition, Guest Designer Project and others were launched to share our vision to the public and among other creatives.

Bill was invited to participate in their most recent research project into weaving cumulating in an exhibit at this year’s Design Shanghai expo. For our focus we concentrated on weaving as a structural system, while tensile structures were the most obvious, we explored pneumatic structures, concrete impregnated textiles and eventually obsessed ourselves with granular jamming as a way to give woven materials dynamic structural rigidity. We’ll post more of the process and the research but first, some photos of the exhibit and what we showed off： a  granular jamming weave that is attached to a vacuum pump that people can try out and experience.
